So I work with kids all day.
Sometimes I'm sweating through my shirt before noon.
That is not a joke. :)
But I really enjoy my job- always something new happening!
I do a lot of work with sensory processing.
And a big part of that involves "messy play".
Sometimes thats simple.
Like paint, glitter, sand, shaving cream.
Sometimes, it gets a little more involved (by that I mean messy).
Like pudding. And applesauce and macaroni and eggs and crackers.
Like I said -it gets really messy sometimes.
So tonight I realized that I have never explored "messy play" with my own kid.
Come to think of it, he's not really a fan of being messy at all.
Great OT. Not so great mom. :)
So I got him all pumped about the shaving cream, also know an "sugar cream" to my child.
I stripped him down to nothing, put him in the empty tub and sprayed the shaving cream all over the tub.
Lets just say this. Not a fan.
So then I threw all my OT training out the window and did a big no no.
Spread a bit on his foot. (okay maybe it was more than a bit)
Freak out.
Jumping out of the tub, running and hiding behind the toilet.
Naked.
So I decided to back off a little bit (after cleaning off his foot).
I spread it on my nose.
And both cheeks.
And got it all over my fingers and palms.
And surprisingly, he warmed up to it a bit.
And thought the shaving cream on my nose was SO funny.
And actually touched it with one index finger.
I covered his little piglet, his donald duck and his buzz lightyear with the shaving cream.
And he really enjoyed picking them up and washing them off.
But I was glad he was handling the shaving cream.
So by the end of the bath, he was all about it.
Asking for more "sugar cream".
And loving drawing stuff in the shaving cream.
And it ended up being a fun work night activity.
We need some of those, thats for sure.
Its funny how you can do that (minus the shaving cream on the foot part) all day, and totally fail to do it with your own kid!
Watch out Mister N. The messy play is coming!
